What is Situational Awareness?

Let’s get to the point. Former Commander in chief of U-S special forces General Wayne Downing Ret. put it this way.

“Situational awareness is... where is the enemy ... not just the one in front of you... but where are the other guys who might hit you in the flank... and where are my guys.  And how can you conduct an operation in a way that delivers maximum hurt to the enemy.”

Situational Awareness has it’s roots in avionics and the military. It uses arrays of sensors to deliver detailed battlefield intelligence to commanders and troops. This includes GPS, satellite, Infrared, laser, sound, light, radio, magnetometers, ground vibration and all the traditional senses. It also includes sensing devices from the edge of science. These devices are integrated into a system that gives ground and air forces a much greater awareness of everything around them.

But Situational Awareness goes further. The full meaning of that information must be determined and communicated in a clear and understandable manner.
